This Snetzler chamber organ was a gift from George III to his daughter Princess Amelia on her 21st birthday. It was kept in Buckingham House until about 1820 when the organ was bought by Lord Egremont and presented to Eton College in 1926 by his family. The pipework was equipped with sliders by Harrison & Harrison Ltd in 1929, which is why the tuning is now more manageable but somewhat uneven.

College Chapel (Hill Organ)
|
Prior to the 1986 restoration by N P Mander Ltd, Hill & Son had two attempts at replacing the previous organ. First in 1886 on the new stone screen, then again in 1902, and the present stop list is very much a compromise between the two. The removal of the 1886 Hill organ from Eton Parish Church provided an invaluable stock of contemporary pipework. With the highly-decorated pipe fronts which were restored by Anna Plowden and her team, the instrument benefits from a generous chapel acoustic.
