All the works recorded on this disc were to a large extent inspired by the organs of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. Franck’s Chorals were written for the intimate and beautiful sound of the organ in St Clothilde, while Dupré’s inspiration was undoubtedly the organ which he loved most of all; in the Trocadero. Its fate, a rebuild in the Palais de Chaillot which made it almost unrecognisable, was a source of perpetual sadness to him. Widor’s inspiration was undoubtedly the heroic masterpiece in St Sulpice.
